The night we got there, the kids were able to go on the field and have their picture made with the Braves 3rd baseball, number 17. Troy thought it was pretty cool that he plays 3rd base and is also 17.
The next morning was the skills competition. Troy competed in the pitching portion. Nerves got the best of him and he didn't do the best he could do. That afternoon, we had practice with our team so that everyone could meet and so the coaches could figure out where to play everyone. That was the first time that most of them had even met each other because Thursday night meeting the Braves player was kind of chaotic. That night we went to the Braves game and the kids got to walk on the field. Troy said that was one of his favorite parts - getting to walk on a major league field. Unfortunately, the Braves lost to the Diamondbacks that night.
Saturday morning started pool play. We lost both pool play games but only by 1 run in the first game and 2 runs in the second game. That afternoon, we went to the pool and then dinner.
Sunday morning was bracket play. We won the first game. We lost the second game, but only by 3 runs, and the team we lost too eventually won the entire tournament. It was a fun competitive weekend. Every game was fun to watch and we were playing good baseball.
What amazed me the most was that even though the boys that didn't know each other, they were able to build trust with each other quickly and cheer each other on and play well together. Troy did great and threw so many players out at first. I've never seem him make that throw as well as he did this weekend. There was one play in particular where he back handed to field the ground ball, and still had time to make the throw to first get the kid out. I'm not sure there was any ball that got by him in the tournament. Fielding is his favorite part, and you could tell he was confident.
We had such a great time and enjoyed getting to meet so many new people and build more connections.
